COURSE DESCRIPTION
BH501c is the third part of BH501, Biblical Hebrew. Students will learn Hebrew participles, numbers, infinitives, and weak verbs. They will also learn possessive endings, plural nouns, piel, hifil, and verbs with object suffixes. Finally, they will translate passages from the Hebrew Bible and the Siddur.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After completing this course successfully, the student will be able to:

  • Translate Hebrew text with and write sentences using Hebrew participles,
  • Translate text and write sentences using Hebrew commands,
  • Translate text and write sentences using numbers,
  • Translate text and write sentences using infinitives,
  • Conjugate weak Pa’al verbs
  • Translate text and write sentences using possessive endings and plural nouns.
  • Conjugate strong and weak Pi’el and hif’il verbs
  • Translate text and write sentences using verbs with object suffixes
  • Translate simple passages from the Siddur

RELATIONSHIP TO THE CURRICULUM
This course is required for all MJTI Master’s programs and some certificate programs.

RELEVANCE
Why Hebrew? Learning Hebrew will help you understand the Bible more clearly, gain insight into Jewish culture and worldview, and identify with the people of the Tanakh, such as King David, Isaiah, and the heroes of faith. You will also gain skills in reading and understanding the Siddur and Jewish prayer.

PREREQUISITE
Students must take or be enrolled in GR101 Introduction to Graduate Studies. There are no Hebrew prerequisites.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
Students need access to a computer, videoconferencing equipment (a mic, speaker, and webcam), and a dedicated internet connection.

COURSE FORMAT
This class meets twice per week online with weekly textbook assignments.

REQUIREMENTS
Students must meet by Zoom twice weekly and complete textbook assignments.
