March: Take-Aways from the Sermon on the Mount

Wednesdays, 12 (Noon) Eastern, March 4, 11, 18, & 25

Takeaways from the Sermon on the Mount

In the introduction to her book, Sermon on the Mount: A Beginner’s Guide to the Kingdom of Heaven, Amy-Jill Levine (AJ) describes an “aha moment” she had while studying the New Testament at Smith College with Professor Karl Donfried. According to AJ, Prof Donfried helped her see “that Jesus is not a Christian talking to other Christians; he is a Jew talking to other Jews. He is not telling his fellow Jews to do away with the Torah. That would be ridiculous. Rather, he is telling them that he has insight into the heart of the Torah, and they would do well to listen to him.” She then concludes, “I started to read the Sermon on the Mount as a teaching given by one Jew to fellow Jews.”

During the four weeks in March, we will look at some of AJ’s insights and try to get a better understanding of the text and context of Yeshua’s teachings.
