January/February: Great Medieval Jewish Thinkers

January 24-February 14, 2021—Sundays @ 1 p.m. ET

This course will examine four Great Medieval Jewish Thinkers: Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon (Rambam), Rabbi Shlomo ben Yitzhak (Rashi), Rabbi Moses ben Nachman Gerondi (Ramban), Judah ben Shmuel HaLevi (HaLevi). These four thinkers touched three centuries with their brilliance, encompassing a span of about 200 years of scholarship. They impacted their Sephardi and Ashkenazi contemporary worlds, shaped modern Jewish thinking, and influenced other religions and worldviews. Rambam was a philosopher/commentator; Rashi was an exegete; Ramban was a bible commentator/kabbalist; and HaLevi was a philosopher/poet. Together, they form a complementary mosaic fabric. In order to derive the most out of the classes, it is highly recommended that you read a short biography of each of these medieval thinkers by searching them online, starting with Rambam.
