December: New Emerging Jewish Communities
December 8, 15, 22, and 29, 2022—Wednesdays @ 12 p.m. ET
Jews in China, East Africa, Latin America, and even hidden within North America compose communities that have captivated Jewish imagination. They tell remarkable stories of Jewish origins, migrations, persecutions, and alternative traditions. The existence of these emerging communities raises important questions, such as Who gets to be Jewish? Are Jews white? and What traditions are authentically Jewish? This course will transform your mental image of Jewishness as it explores the Jewish communities of Kai Feng, the Beta Israel and Lemba of Africa, the descendants of Sephardic Conversos, and in North America, those who identify as Jews of Color.
