June: Great Modern Jewish Thinkers

June 3-24, 2020—Wednesdays @ 1 p.m. ET

Throughout the ages great Jewish thinkers have arisen in a variety of disciplines, elevating humanity forward — Moses, the Apostle Paul, Rabbi Akiva, Judah HaNasi, Rashi, Rambam, Judah Halevy, Albert Einstein, and Jonas Salk to name just a few. This course examines the lives of four modern Jewish thinkers and explores what made these otherwise ordinary people, great. Their contributions reached well beyond the Jewish community, with widespread implications for shaping the future history of humanity, for good. Theodore Herzl is the father of the modern state of Israel, whose visionary prowess eventuated in Israel statehood. The father of Modern Hebrew, Eliezer ben Yehuda, who adhered steadfastly to his vision of adapting Hebrew as the Jewish national language. Louis Brandeis, the first U.S. Supreme Court Jewish Justice, rendered decisions that shaped the future of societal issues on free speech and privacy. Abraham Joshua Heschel, an ordained conservative Rabbi, portrayed the awesomeness of God like no other.
